Information and Registration Ride Overview

Travel down the beautiful and scenic Highway 1, while enjoying stunning views of the Pacific Coast at every turn! The Pacific Ocean will be off your right shoulder as you head south through great cities like Carmel, Big Sur, San Simeon, Pismo Beach, Solvang and Ventura. The ride will leave Palo Alto and will finish at the Santa Monica Pier. 

Due to the difficult nature of the California Challenge there will be a limited number of handcycles/recumbents permitted. If you are interested in participating please submit your name to the Ride Director, Bruce Gustafson for approval at: BruceG@ride2recovery.com


ALL PARTICIPANTS MUST REGISTER ONLINE.  Participation is by invitation only and your online registration does not guarantee you a slot. If you participate in a Project HERO Program, please contact your local Project HERO Representative to let them know you are registered. For all other Wounded, Ill and Injured Service Members and Veterans (Healing Heroes), please contact your Regional Managers, West Region-Tommy Muir and East Region-Mike King.


This ride is rated Category "A" (difficult)

Invitational criteria may be based on one or more of the following:

1. Category (difficulty) of the ride

2. Participant's ability to successfully complete the ride

3. Participant's past history on R2R Challenges

4. Participation in Project Hero or Strava

5. Fundraising

The ride will be limited to 200 participants with a minimum $3,000 donation. Your registration fee is applied to your fundraising goal. All healing heroes ride for free. There is an active duty Military or VA employee discount of 50% for full Challenge participants.

Challenge Participant riders will receive a Ride 2 Recovery jersey, socks, and T-shirt. Your $3,000 donation will also include hotel housing, limited rider support, luggage transportation (70lbs max), daily route guides, marked course, rest stops, snacks, meals. (Please note that participants are responsible for their own transportation to the ride start and from the ride finish.) There may also be nighttime entertainment on selected evenings.

ONE DAY RIDER PACKAGES

$75 - Standard One Day Rider Package: Price includes event t-shirt, mechanical support, hydration/snacks.

$200 - Deluxe One Day Rider Package: Price includes event t-shirt, mechanical support, hydration/snacks, "goodie bag", water bottle, pair of R2R socks, and limited edition R2R event jersey.

$450 - Overnight Deluxe One Day Rider Package: Price includes event t-shirt, mechanical support, hydration/snacks, "goodie bag", water bottle, pair of R2R socks, and limited edition R2R event jersey. Hotel included at host hotel (double occupancy, based on availability) the night before the ride. Dinner is also included with the veterans with priority access to all nightly events.

$600 - Overnight Deluxe One Day Rider Package with Transportation: Price includes event t-shirt, mechanical support, hydration/snacks, "goodie bag", water bottle, pair of R2R socks, and limited edition R2R event jersey. Hotel included at host hotel (double occupancy, based upon availability) the night before the ride. Dinner is also included with the veterans with priority access to all nightly events. After the event, transportation will be privided back to the ride start.

California Challenge

Challenges are multi-day events that cover 350-450 miles. A Challenge will push the participant to their limit, both physically and mentally. Paid participation in a full Challenge ride includes hotel housing, limited rider support, luggage transportation (70lbs max), daily route guides, marked course, rest stops, snacks, meals. There may also be nighttime entertainment on selected evenings. You may also participate in any single day of a Challenge event.

The Honor Rides Series raises awareness and is the funding arm for Ride 2 Recovery and gives the public the opportunity to ride with healing heroes and enlisted military on a non-competitive, fun ride. Close to 20 Honor Rides will take place throughout the year, with varying distances from 10 to 100 miles. All funds raised through the Honor Ride Series support Project Hero programs throughout the US.

Ride 2 Recovery’s Project HERO (Healing Exercise Rehabilitation Opportunity) provides training and supports cycling programs at military hospitals and VA locations to help Healing Heroes overcome obstacles they face.Project HERO has proven the effectiveness of group riding in the rehabilitation of injured servicemen and women. Cycling is an important part of the recovery and rehabilitation program.

Special Events are meant to provide a rehabilitative experience for Healing Heroes that is similar to Ride 2 Recovery’s Challenge Series but in a unique location with different and distinctive activities. Generally, these events require advanced fitness and abilities compared to the Challenge Series.
